Zootechnical registration of phytogenics

Officially proving the claims

The phytogenic masterminds – Educating people based on proven experience

Delacon has gained profound experience in developing and manufacturing high-quality phytogenic feed additives for almost 30 years. Not least because of our passion to discover the nature and its enormous potential, we have developed from a small company to the global market leader in phytogenic feed additives, which shows strong evidence for the efficacy of our products that are designed for the individual needs of diverse species. In the course of our journey, Delacon not only coined the term ‘phytogenic’, but has also took a lot of efforts to reveal and explain the modes of action of diverse plant-derived active substances, giving evidence that we take our position as global leading expert seriously.

Standardization, repeatability, traceability – we do not shy away from high-level evaluation

Nevertheless, many people still have little knowledge and experience about modes of action and the optimal way to apply phytogenic feed additives in feed. Therefore, phytogenics might be looked at with a certain skepticism. Moreover, people are uncertain about which product to trust, because of thinking that there is a lack in significant trial data.

Hence, Delacon decided to take a huge step in proving the efficacy of its phytogenic feed additives, and strived for a registration as a zootechnical feed additive.

Behind the scenes of the authorization procedure

Within this complex registration process, a dossier on complete, comprehensive and validated data on quality, safety and efficacy of the feed additive is evaluated by independent scientists of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

The preparation of the dossier often takes years, since there is need to provide data of a vast number of safety and efficacy trials, basing on different methods and conducted in different (European) countries.

The application officially has to be submitted to the European Commission, which mandates the European Union Reference Laboratories (EURL) and the EFSA to evaluate the dossier in detail. The EURL analyzes and evaluates relevant parameters of the samples, the methods and traceability in the additive in the feed chain: additive – premixture – feed. The full evaluation report has to be submitted to the EFSA.

After the order by the European Commission and the receipt of a valid application, the EFSA has to give a scientific opinion to the European Commission, the Member States and the applicant about the safety and efficacy of the additive. Thus, it proves whether the feed additive has the potential to meet the stated claims and whether the product is safe for target animals, workers, consumers and the environment.

The more complex a product is, the longer the evaluation time by the EFSA will take, compared to products consisting of only a few single substances with no or only little synergistical effects. At Delacon, we develop and manufacture complex plant-based phytogenic feed additives consisting of hundreds of single compounds. The EFSA is looking into the detailed composition of each ingredient, the constituents of essential oils, as well as all herbs & spices. Therefore, Delacon provided a lot of supplementary information as well as a vast number of significant studies and trials using a variety of different methods.

After this intense evaluation, EFSA formulates a scientific opinion, which serves as the basis for the final decision and authorization granted by the European Commission in concordance with the Member States.

Authorization procedure:

  1. Dossier submission
    to European Commission (EC)

  2. Verification of the provided analytical methods and traceability '
by the Community Reference Laboratory (EURL)

  3. Assessment of safety and efficacy
by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)

  4. Authorization
by European Commission and Member States

Entering a new era in 2012: first zootechnical registration for a phytogenic feed additive

Delacon was able to successfully pass the stringent evaluation, since they combined nature with high tech and replaced belief with fundamental knowledge. Delacon was the first company to receive a zootechnical registration by the European Union for a phytogenic feed additive. This is seen as the scientific ‘gold standard’ in the feed industry, because in the course of strict approval processes, not only the safety but also the efficacy of the product as growth promoter has been officially confirmed by EFSA.

Delacon’s phytogenic feed additive Fresta® F acts as a natural performance enhancer in swine production, since EFSA concluded its potential to improve the growth rate of weaned piglets in 2012.

Never satisfied with the status quo: Focusing on the next milestone

Research and development do not stop after obtaining the registration for a zootechnical feed additive: we do not only provide one phytogenic feed additive for general use in livestock”, but worked out a whole range of different products, each being precisely aligned to the needs or challenges of the respective target animal. Therefore, we decided to get once again into the EU registration process - now for one of our poultry products.

In 2017, the EU published the second authorization of a Delacon product as zootechnical feed additive. Biostrong® 510 EC has the potential to be efficacious in improving performance of chickens and minor avian species, both for fattening and reared for laying . EFSA found the product being both, safe and effective.

Proven efficacy: Pioneers always strive for gold

The independent registration process for feed additives in the European Union not only gives proof of the products’ safety: An authorization as zootechnical additive guarantees the effectiveness of the respective product, and will be granted exclusively to feed additives with significant beneficial effects on animals’ performance. Passing the complex registration process consumes a high amount of resources. All the more, we are glad to announce the positive results of these independent evaluations to our global network of customers and partners.

While Biostrong® 510 is available globally, the zootechnical additive Biostrong® 510 EC is available only in Europe due to different legislation and product registration frameworks, and needs declaration as a zootechnical additive. Indeed, the zootechnical EU registration is a worldwide reference for producers and distinguishes Delacon products from others on the market.

Extensive research and high-level quality management are the basis for the achieving a zootechnical registration – two key factors, which are consistent for all Delacon products.
