Optimizing feed formulation for the best return on investment in broiler production

In broiler production, feed costs account for about 60-70% of the total production costs. Therefore optimization of feed formulation is very important – for both producers and nutrition suppliers. Profitable poultry production means obtaining the best return on investment for different players in the poultry production chain. The phytogenic (plant-derived) feed additive Biostrong® 510 has proven its potential to promote performance and productivity, reducing feed costs per unit of final product.

Besides several management tools to improve bird performance, such as genetics, housing and disease control, the main focus should be on feed cost reduction per unit of final product. All production professionals agree that feed efficiency plays a key role in reducing feed cost. Studies have shown that the addition of phytogenic feed additives stimulate the secretion of digestive juices and enhance the activity of digestive enzymes in the intestinal tract. Increased enzyme activity improves nutrient digestion and thus increases the availability of nutrients and minerals for absorption. The result is improved feed efficiency and consequently reduced feed costs per kg meat.
Delacon's Biostrong® 510 has proven its value in numerous institute studies and field trials which demonstrate that dietary supplementation with Biostrong® 510 for meat producing poultry enhances bird performance by significantly improving nutrient utilization and feed conversion ratio. Based on specific customer’s desires there are two possibilities of application: Firstly, Biostrong® 510 can be regarded as a regular additive being added 'on-top' in the feed ration. This use will result in increased performance and improved feed efficiency, leading to reduced costs per kg meat and hence to a positive return on investment. Secondly, Biostrong® 510 can be added to the diet according to Delacon's Performizer® concept, using nutritional matrix values to reduce feed costs by reoptimizing the total mixed ration. These nutritional matrix values are based on several digestibility studies in different poultry species and different age periods.


Farmers and integrators benefit from a return on investment of minimum 3:1

In times of high raw material prices, investments in feed additives might seem to increase feed price, but save feed costs in the long run by improved nutrient utilization and animal performance. To evaluate cost effectiveness of the phytogenic feed additive Biostrong® 510 to the broiler diets when added on top, the return on investment (ROI) was calculated in several studies. The ROI is the ratio between the money gained from an investment relative to the amount of money invested. The calculation of the ROI is based on improved final body weight, and selling price per kg live broiler and feed costs (including the feed additive) per broiler.

The addition of Biostrong® 510 to broiler diets on top increases the costs per ton of feed. A slight increase that certainly pays off. An additional margin, resulting from increased boiler performance, leads to consistent economic benefits. Economic calculations from institute experiments and field trials show a typical ROI for Biostrong® 510 of over 3:1. This means, that if you invest around 1 US$ per 100 broilers within a production cycle, you will ultimately gain an additional 3 US$ per 100 broilers at the end of the cycle.


Favorable feed formulations lower feed costs for feed mill and premix companies

Biostrong® 510 significantly improves the digestibility of nutrients, proven by digestibility and balance trials. Broiler and turkey studies with wheat-based and corn-soy diets have shown improved utilization of protein, energy, calcium and phosphorous with the use of Biostrong® 510. Based on increased nutrient digestibility, nutrient matrix values were derived that can be used in least costs feed formulation programs.

When Biostrong® 510 is used, an additional nutritional value for e.g. crude protein (amino acids) is delivered to the feed formula by increased protease synthesis in the intestinal tract. This means that using Biostrong® 510 leads to savings of approximately 11 kg of high protein soybean meal per metric ton of feed. As the need for mineral compounds and energy supply is lowered as well, more favorable formulations are possible. These reductions play the key role in lowering feed costs while ensuring high bird performance.
