Growth performance in poultry

Did you know that up to 70% of poultry production costs are feed related? So, it´s obvious that the major focus for profitable poultry production is feed efficiency.

Improving nutrient utilization to optimize laying and growth performance in poultry is the most powerful success strategy in poultry production and still meets consumer demands and expectations from the market.

Efficiency – the key ingredient in poultry production

It is estimated that by 2050 the world's population will rise to around ten billion people - this will increase the demand for poultry meat and eggs: by approximately 70%. The low cost of poultry meat and eggs and the absence of religious restrictions make this relatively cheap animal protein source the primary choice for consumers and driver of the growth in total meat production. Modern poultry production is a highly sophisticated, integrated industry and its success depends strongly on expert management and pinpoint nutrition. In addition to improved laying and growth performance in poultry, product quality and food safety of meat and eggs are crucial for long-term profit in the market.

Did you know?

The industry’s standard to measure production efficiency in poultry is the feed conversion ratio (FCR), expressing the amount of feed consumed per flock divided by the amount of live weight or kg eggs produced during a full production cycle. The lower the number, the more efficient feed conversion is. Today, a standard broiler chicken reared under good management conditions will have an FCR between 1.5 to 1.7 and 1.9 to 2.2 for laying hens.

Nutrient utilization is a prerequisite

Improving nutrient utilization and optimizing feed conversion ratio in poultry is one of the most effective strategies to increase the profitability of poultry production. However, all kinds of stressors threaten normal gut health and normal absorption and utilization of nutrients, thus may reduce feed efficiency, welfare and potentially product quality: heat stress, high population density and high infection pressure can lead to impaired laying and growth performance in poultry - going along with reduced profitability for the producer.

Balanced rations that supply the proper nutrient ratios per stage of production are a prerequisite for maintaining stability of the digestive functions and consistent performance in poultry. The need-based nutrient utilization enables the efficient conversion of valuable nutritional components into best growth or laying performance. As such, the most effective strategy to reduce production costs and increase the profitability of poultry production is the improvement of nutrient utilization and the optimization of feed efficiency.
