Reach out for a sustainable source of protein
The resource-saving production of protein due to a worldwide growing consumer demand confronts the industry with many challenges.
In last decades “aquafarming” and the establishment of aquaculture emerged to an efficient system coping with the special situation of protein production from aquatic species and evolved as a powerful counterstrategy against overfishing of the oceans. Thus, a fast growth in this industry is not surprising at all; in 2016 aquaculture production reached similar levels as capture fishery systems.
Phytogenic support to overcome main challenges
Nevertheless, although this relatively young business sector has improved substantially within the last years concerning ecological and animal welfare issues, the aqua industry still faces severe challenges. Reducing eutrophication and minimizing the use of antibiotics as well as chemical treatments against ectoparasites are the major concerns of consumers, whereat the industry strives for enhanced growth rates and feed efficiency, high survival rates and improved reproductive success to keep profitability as high as possible.
Doubtlessly, in all these aspects phytogenic feed additives can contribute to improve the situation, resulting in benefits for animals, consumers and producers. A broad variety of different phytogenic substances allows to aim for different targets: For example, an enhanced nutrient digestibility will increase performance of fish and shrimp – here, phytogenics in aquaculture can kill two birds with one stone: less emissions directly counteract the environmental pollution and improve the feed conversion of animals, respectively. Consequently, a faster growth as well as health support can be expected, resulting in a reduced need of antibiotics. On another level, a different formulation of phytogenics can be used to support stress tolerance of the individuals, which directly improves animal welfare within the production system.
Development of a new phytogenic product line
Up to date, Delacon is in the final phase of the development process to create a new phytogenic product line specially aligned to the needs of aquaculture.
Our R&D team works insistently on the fine tuning of innovative formulations of some plant-derived combinations aiming to maximize the benefits of our customers in the aquaculture industry. You will soon find here information on new phytogenic solutions and how Delacon contributes to sustainable protein production with phytogenics in aquaculture.
